Abstract Although attachment behaviors are highly important in biological terms, they are also difficult to study, since they involve cognitive and affective variables. Studies in several animal species, and, recently, also in human beings, demonstrate the importance of oxytocin and vasopressin in the three broad levels of central processing: the molecular and cellular levels, network processing and the ones arising from the psychosocial and behavioral levels. Modulation through the dopaminergic pathways which originate in the ventral tegmental area and its projections to the NAcc seem to be important in the development of couple’s preferences, while the neuropeptides Ox and AVP intervene in linking the social stimuli with the dopaminergic pathways of attachment behavior. Neural mechanisms associated with drug abuse and addiction, on the one hand, and attachment behaviors, on the other hand, share three elements: • the search (seeking) for social recognition • reward • euphoria. Investigations in the molecular levels of addiction will undoubtedly be essential to help unveil those mechanisms that may be transferred to the study of attachment behaviors and, therefore, understand one of the most complex and intriguing emotions: love. It is hard to think of a behavioral process that is intrinsically more important to us than attachment behavior. To eat, sleep or move is necessary for surviving, but we would not be able to live without the social link of attachment. Over the last twenty years, and through the study of a wide spectrum of species including human beings, the neural foundations of attachment behavior have come into light in the molecular levels of network systems and the complex behaviors which stem from them. Oxytocin and vasopressin arise as new treatment targets, particularly in synergistic combinations with psychotherapies for mental disorders characterized by social dysfunctions, such as autism, social anxiety disorder, borderline personality disorders and schizophrenia.
