Abstract For a long time, it has been accepted that schizophrenia, mood alterations, and other psychiatric diseases are biological disorders. In recent years, the rapid evolution of imaging technology has allowed the in vivo study of the brain to confirm such claim. The possibility to perform functional metabolic, perfusion and structural measurements enabled to map and analyze the brain at the moment of thinking, remembering, imagining or focusing attention. Other paradigms of research on imaging used in Psychiatry include the study of neurotransmitters, and the effects caused by drugs, as well as studies on cognitive activation and pharmacology tests. This article describes the different structural and functional imaging techniques employed in studies of neuropsychiatric pathology Palabras clave Neuroimágenes, SPECT, PET, RM.
