Is the deficit in the working memory in 8- year-old children is associated with the absence of a healthy breakfast? Abstract This research aimed to analyze whether the intake of a healthy breakfast introduced statistically significant differences in the working memory of children aged 8 years-old who attended the third grade of elementary school in state schools located in Pergamino (Buenos Aires, Argentina). Thus, a sample of 126 children divided in two groups was analyzed: an experimental group who was on an empty stomach (n=63) and a control group that had had a healthy breakfast (n=63). Both the experimental and the control groups were assigned a standard protocol of neuropsychological tests such as the The Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test –parts A and B- (Rey, 1941; Osterrieth, 1994), the Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning Test (Rey, 1964; Schmidt, 1996; Spreen & Strauss, 1998) and two subtests corresponding to the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-IV (digit, letters and numbers retention; Taborda, Brenlla & Barenza, 2011; Weschler, 2004, 2011). The results showed that the of the working memory performance of cognitive function among children aged 8 yearsold is inferior when on an empty stomach, and superior with the intake of a healthy breakfast, as well as the intellectual level and the visual and auditory delayed recall. This enables to conclude that the omission of breakfast generates a physiological state that negatively affects the cognitive function and learning.
