Abstract A series of new terms and concepts have appeared in recent years, which display a different approach to the study of the brain. Among the new concepts are the connectome and connectivity, which are beginning to play a major role in understanding the brain, as can be appreciated through several techniques promoting the in-vivo study of the brain. Techniques such as fibertracking, measurement techniques of cortical width and the functional techniques to study the brain in default enable an approach towards these new concepts and offer a new and even incomparable visualization to what up to now has been used to study the brain. In this article, the new techniques such as tractography, the measurements of cortical width and the study of brain in default are described an characterized, as well as the functional and structural techniques which have been most used in the last years, such as SPECT, PET and fMRI, which where the first diagnostic tools used in research and in the neuropsychiatric clinic extended use. It is key to go on incorporating the technological advances to strengthen and provide more and more solidity to the diagnostic field in neuropsychiatry.
