El ejercicio físico durante el embarazo aporta beneficios a la madre y al feto. Sin embargo, el tipo de ejercicio elegido, la frecuencia de realización y la intensidad de la actividad física son elecciones decisivas para garantizar la obtención de los resultados deseados. La mayoría de las guías internacionales sugieren que las mujeres embarazadas deben acumular al menos 150 minutos de actividad física de intensidad moderada cada semana para lograr beneficios de salud clínicamente significativos y reducir las complicaciones del embarazo. Los tipos de ejercicio más adecuados son los aeróbicos, y especialmente los que se realizan en un medio acuático para mantener el equilibrio postural, evitar caídas y regular la temperatura corporal, evitando sobrecalentamientos que pueden ser teratogénicos. El ejercicio físico durante el embarazo permite un mejor control del peso corporal de la gestante, además de mantener el peso en el rango normal del bebé al nacer, evitando el sobrepeso y una serie de consecuencias para la salud a lo largo de la vida. Los beneficios para la progenie involucran a todo el organismo, y en este capítulo discutiremos con más detalle los efectos del ejercicio materno sobre el metabolismo cerebral, muscular y adiposo en humanos y animales. Los datos de la literatura son aún incipientes, pero hay evidencia de que el ejercicio materno es un método barato, saludable y con poco riesgo de efectos adversos; contribuyendo a mejorar la calidad de vida de la madre y la progenie de manera consistente y a largo plazo.
