Primera parte Depression in Childhood and Adolescence. Abstract The goals of the present work are: 1. To gather information from experts on the use of antidepressants in infant and juvenile depression. 2. To know whether treatments with antidepressants achieve the expected results in infant and juvenile depression. In the clinical practice conducted at the Dr. Carolina Tobar García Hospital, the only monovalent national institution devoted to the treatment of children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders, we have been working on topics related with infant and juvenile depression. We observe the need to provide treatment to children and adolescents with depression, a population that tends to increase in hospital consultations. We should bear in mind that at present, controversy has aroused with regards to the use of antidepressant medications, in terms of their efficacy and adverse events. In our clinical practice, we had not detected effects such as the increase of ideas or suicide attempts with the use of Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors (SSRs). That was how the need to gather the different opinions from the experts arised in order to obtain a clearer insight founded on infant and adolescent depression, as well as to find out if psychopharmacological treatments with antidepressants provide the intended result. Palabras clave Depresión infanto juvenil, tratamiento, antidepresivos, resultados, efectos adversos. Key words Infant and juvenile depression, treatment, antidepressants, results, adverse effects.
