La prevalencia de suicidios de personas que se encuentran con PPPL es más alta que la población general al comparar con los mismos rangos etarios. En Europa se estima que es 7 veces mayor y en un estudio entre 10 países de América Latina entre los años 2010 y 2017 reportaron que la tasa anual de suicidio en cárceles cada 100 mil personas era entre 8 y 86 según los investigadores Domenico Fritz y colaboradores en 2020, y en otros países se estimó un riesgo entre 11 a 14 veces mayor que la población general, siendo mayor entre los internos procesados
aproximadamente 7.5 veces mayor que en la población general) que entre los condenados (6 veces mayor). Los suicidios en las cárceles de los
Estados Unidos se estiman en una tasa 4 veces mayor que en la población general (Mumola y Noonan, 2007) siendo la mayor cantidad de víctimas aquellos hombres de raza blanca, arrestados por delitos menores o en estado de intoxicación y los que se encuentran aislados, con mayor prevalencia de fallecimientos dentro de las 24 horas de ingreso al establecimiento correccional (Davis y Muscat, 1993; Haynes, 1989).
